Interesting facts about EFAA...

1. What does EFAA do?

EFAA has been the community safety net for families for 85 years. We provide temporary help with food, emergency shelter, housing related expenses such as rent and utility bills and minor transportation and medical expenses. Before providing help, we talk with each person requesting help to assess their situation, to see what other resources can be of help and to develop a plan for them to once again become self-sufficient.

  • About 85% of the people we help are families with children and 15% are single people who are disabled or elderly.
  • 60% of those coming to EFAA for assistance are working at the time
  • In fulfilling our responsibilities, EFAA works closely with many other agencies and the faith community to insure services are coordinated.

2. Who does EFAA serve?

Low income families, seniors, and people with disabilities who are residents of Boulder or Broomfield counties in Colorado.

3. Where does EFAA's support come from?

EFAA is locally funded. This approach keeps us connected to our community and gives us the flexibility needed to meet the needs of people coming to us in an individualized manner.

Most of EFAA's funding comes from private donations from individuals, businesses, congregations and foundations. We also receive generous support from Boulder County, the City of Boulder, City and County of Broomfield, City of Longmont, City of Lafayette, and Foothills United Way.

4. What volunteer opportunities does EFAA provide?

EFAA's well-developed volunteer program offers many rewarding volunteer opportunities. Some examples are: assisting with the collection and distribution of food to families from the food closet, helping a child staying at our shelter with homework, confidentially interviewing people requesting help, serving as a receptionist, helping with building maintenance, and planning our annual Celebration event. We also are happy to develop company work group volunteer opportunities. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, at 303-951-7663 or email us at volunteercoordinator@efaa.org.

5. What difference will a gift to EFAA make?

People in your community will be helped. Because all of EFAA's services are provided locally, your donation will make a difference in your community. EFAA is proud of our community focus, which relies on local resources to meet local needs.

Often EFAA is the first place someone who needs help comes to when they don't know where else to turn, and the last resort for a family who has not been able to get help anywhere else. Our integrated continuum of services can provide the right help at the right time for families in need.

  • Your gift will provide immediate, tangible help to people who have nowhere else to turn for help.
  • Because our services are so direct, the benefits of our services are quite clear. People are fed, homeless families are provided with shelter, families on the verge of eviction can stay in their home, or utilities remain on.
  • EFAA's efficient operations multiply the impact of your donation. EFAA's widespread use of volunteers and in-kind donations stretches donations made to EFAA. For example, we expect to distribute about $350,000 worth of food in 2003-04 while spending only $15,000 to purchase food. The remainder of food needed comes from food drives in local businesses, congregations, neighborhoods, schools, and from Community Foodshare, a partner in EFAA's food closet operation.

6. What difference will a specific amount of gift make?

We have developed giving opportunities at all levels to encourage support from all age groups. Examples of the impact made by gifts at a variety of levels are:

  • A one-time gift of $10 will help provide a much needed prescription medication for someone who otherwise would go without.
A gift of $10 per month will provide admission fees and art supplies for the childrens’ programs at EFAA’s emergency shelters in Boulder or Longmont.
  • A one-time gift of $25 will provide one week’s worth of food for a family living in an emergency shelter.
