About EFAA's History

  • Begun in 1918, EFAA has been at the heart of our communities helping efforts for 85 years.
  • During one year of the Depression, 1932, when 25% of the County population was on relief, $16,173.83 in assistance was provided in food, housing and other areas of need which are addressed by EFAA today. In 2002-03, EFAA provided $522,276.
  • In 1973 the agency's name changed from the Social Services and Child Welfare Association to Emergency Family Assistance Association, Inc.

About EFAA's Services

  • EFAA provides comprehensive assistance to families facing a financial crisis so severe that they cannot meet their basic needs. Our capacity to meet a wide variety of needs (food, rent, emergency shelter, transitional housing, transportation, etc.) while providing in-depth casework, allows us to meet short-term needs efficiently while developing a long-term stabilization plan.
  • EFAA is highly respected by other human service organizations. A survey of peer organizations indicated 93% were "satisfied with the services they and their clients received."

About EFAA's People

  • EFAA is governed exclusively by volunteer Board of Directors, all of whom live and/or work in Boulder or Broomfield Counties. No ties exist to a regional or national parent organization.
  • Volunteers provide 40% of the staff hours needed to operate the organization.
  • EFAA is fortunate to have a dedicated staff, which has been with the organization an average of 6 years. This stability in an unusually high turnover industry provides the continuity needed to maintain high quality services.

About EFAA's Supporters
Our local funding base is the key ingredient in providing staff the flexibility needed to respond to people on a case-by-case basis.

  • In 2002-03, over 3,000 individuals, businesses, congregations, service clubs, schools, scout troops, etc., in our community made financial or in-kind contributions to EFAA.
  • The religious community provides donated food and many volunteers. Thirty congregations from almost all faiths provide financial support. Congregations often refer people needing help to EFAA to insure that help is coordinated.
  • Twenty foundations and trusts in the area supported EFAA generously in 2002-03.
  • The business community is very involved with EFAA through in-kind gifts and group volunteer projects. Over 180 companies, large and small, made a financial contribution in 2002-03.

About EFAA's Future

  • Since 2001, EFAA has experienced a 40% increase in services provided. As our economy continues to falter, the strain on EFAA to meet ever-growing needs in our community will continue.
  • Welfare reform and other changes in federal and state assistance programs, the creation of many low wage jobs which can't support a family, immigration to our area and other demographic, economic and political trends will provide increased demand for EFAA's services.
  • Continued improvements in efficiency will be made by expanding volunteer involvement in strategic areas and by the increased use of technology throughout the organization.
  • EFAA will maintain its long time commitment to remaining vital, responsive to a changing environment and being a responsible steward of resources entrusted to us by those who support our work.
