Walk in Their Shoes

Blue Path: Martin’s Second Chapter

Martin is a father and husband, who devoted 24 years to the same restaurant — until the day it closed last fall. Now at 61 years old, finding stable, well-paying work is an uphill battle. His wife has a medical condition and is unable to work, so Martin has been the family’s sole provider. He found a dishwashing job to keep going, but the hours are unpredictable and the wages don’t come close to what he once earned. Their son, who is finishing high school, is working in a restaurant and as a delivery driver to help support the family, so he may have to put his college dream aside for now. They came to EFAA when they could no longer keep up with rent and living expenses.

Yellow Path: Cindy’s Fading Vision

Cindy is losing her peripheral vision. As an illustrator, her eyes are her livelihood. She is a single mom. She’s trying to reimagine her entire life — her career, her identity, her daughter’s future — while facing eviction. Desperate and overwhelmed, Cindy didn’t know where to turn. She found EFAA online and filled out the online form late one night. Within days, EFAA called back. Since she was facing homelessness with a child, she was prioritized immediately. They scheduled an appointment to assess her needs and create a plan with her. For the first time in weeks, Cindy felt hope. Someone was listening. Someone cared. And most importantly, someone had a plan to help.

Green Path: The Nez Family’s New Beginning

The Nez Family — Sam, Nella, and their 4 children — found themselves homeless after being evicted from a one-bedroom apartment where all size of them had been living together. Nella is a cook, but since they can’t afford childcare, she stays home with their children. The family relies entirely on Sam’s minimum wage job, which simply isn’t enough for a family of six. After sleeping on friends’ couches, Sam heard about EFAA from a coworker and called immediately. EFAA scheduled an appointment, listened to their story, and began working on a plan to stabilize the family and keep them together. The Nez family wasn’t alone anymore. They had advocates fighting alongside them to find stability, keep the family together, and build a path toward a sustainable future.
